This article explains what a chat activity is and how to use it.
What is chat?
The Chat feature within Learning Space allows individuals to have synchronous discussions in real time. An area which facilitates a chat discussion can be identified by an outlined speech bubble icon, as shown below:
Enter the chat by clicking the title on the right hand side of the chat icon. You will then presented with a screen which looks similar to the following.
It is on this screen you are prompted to enter the chat. In this area you are also presented with a description of the chat, this may include outcomes for the chat and perhaps some user guidelines. To enter the chat click the appropriate link.
A chat pop up window will then appear, in this view you are presented with three sections. The large area on the left is where you can visualise the discussion. The text box to the bottom left of the window is where you type text to be included within the discussion, and to the right is a list of users within the current chat, in this case there is only myself within the chat.
If other users enter the chat it is reflected in the discussion panel as shown below.
The user area of the panel gives additional information. You are able to view the names of other individuals and their profile image, if included. From this panel you are also able to view how long they have been idle for. This figure will reset once some text has been added to the discussion. To exit the chat simply close the chat window.
